NEWS- The Uganda Law Society has strongly condemned the escalating violence in the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election campaigns.

The Electoral Commission is set to hold polls on March 13, 2025, to replace the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.

ULS Deputy President Anthony Asiimwe highlighted incidents of security forces brutalizing National Unity Platform supporters with beatings, live bullets, and tear gas.

The violence followed the abduction of NUP candidate Lawyer Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola by security operatives.

Asiimwe emphasized that such acts threaten the electoral process’s integrity, erode public trust in the rule of law and undermine democratic governance.

The ULS has called upon the Uganda Police Force and other security agencies to desist from excessive force and ensure law and order are maintained while respecting human rights.

The ULS has also urged the Electoral Commission to take a firm stand against electoral violence and ensure a fair and transparent process.

They vowed to defend the rule of law, constitutionalism and human rights and to pursue legal action against those responsible for the violence.
