RUKUNGIRI-One person is reported missing after being swept away by flooding water of River Mineera which borders Kebisoni town council and Nyarushanje sub County in Rukungiri district.
The missing person has been identified as Micheal Tumwesigye a primary school teacher who was riding a motorcycle .
Residents said floods also cut off traffic flow along River Mineera on Wednesday morning 23/11/2022 due to the heavy downpour which started yesterday at around 3:00pm until 11:00pm lasting for 9 hours.
The floods also affected school going children, traders, and boda boda riders among others.
However, according to the residents, the incident occurred today 23rd November 2022 morning at around 7:00am where a primary school teacher was riding a motorcycle UDM 665 U, coming from the side of Nyarushanje sub County heading to Kebisoni.residents say the motorcycle was recovered while the person is still missing.
Can. Charles Karikatyo the Rwankoma village chairperson where the incident happened told our reporter that he was informed by the residents early in the morning about the matter whereby he also informed the police to intervene.
Muhwezi Denis Salongo, a survivor who tried to rescue the victim, told our reporter that he tried by all means but all was in vain since the victim had a motorcycle so that he wouldn’t be able to get him off the water.
Niwasiima Sula, Brian Bakono, Atuheire Edvina and Bagambe Habert, some of the eye witnesses and affected people challenged the government to find a lasting solution to the flooding of the bridge saying this is not the first time it’s happening.
Meanwhile the Rukungiri District acting Police OC station ASP. Agaba Kenneth confirmed the incident saying that police officers have already been deployed at the scene in search of the missing person.
ASP. Agaba added that in the meantime, motorists, residents and other people to and from Kebisoni should use alternative routes or postpone their travels along the bridge until the situation normalizes.
