UPDF Recruit Of Kanungu Dies During Simple Training at Rukungiri Recruitment Stage

A tragic incident has shocked Kanungu district after one UPDF recruit died during a training exercise held in Rukungiri, just before recruits were set to depart for their next stage. Sad news was received about Nuwabiine Elias, son of Bitwiire Joseph, residents of Bikarara cell in Kasheeshe Parish, Kihembo Sub-county, Kanungu district.

The deceased reportedly died during a simple training session at the DISOs office in Rukungiri, an exercise that involved recruits from both Kanungu and Rukungiri districts. According to the police report, the death occurred among 66 recruits from Kanungu, whose names were already included in the recruitment batch.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mbusa Luka from Rukungiri Central Police Station confirmed the incident, describing it as extremely painful that the recruit passed away before the formal departure. He stated that the young man’s death was not linked to harsh treatment, but rather occurred during routine activity such as jogging. SSP Luka noted that the recruit fainted, and later died.

The body has been taken to the mortuary at Rwakabengo Health Centre IV, where a postmortem examination will be conducted tomorrow. After the postmortem, the remains will be handed over to the parents in Kanungu, who had already reported to Rukungiri.

SSP Luka urged the remaining trainees to remain focused throughout the process, warning against backsliding as they are expected to undergo nine months of training. He appealed to the community to support the newly passed officers who are part of the society—relatives, friends, sons, and daughters.
