RUKUNGIRI! Gov’t donates relief food to Bwambara flood victims

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed for compensation of each family which lost their loved ones in the recent floods that hit Bwambara Sub County in Rukungiri district.

During the catastrophe that happened two weeks ago, at least 3 people died and hundreds displaced as floods cut off Kagorogoro village in Bwambara Sub County, Rukungiri District after River Rushaya burst its banks.

While officiating at the distribution of relief food (10,000 Kgs of beans and 20,000 kgs of posho) to the beneficiaries at Bwambara Sub County headquarters yesterday Sunday 14th May 2023, the Rujumbura County Member Of Parliament who doubles as the security minister Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi confirmed that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni directed that each family of those that lost their loved ones during the incident will be given Ugx. 5M.

Minister Jim Muhwezi however said that the dangers inherit in environmental degradation by cutting forests, invading wetlands, cultivating on river banks, settling in flood plains of rivers among others. He urged Ugandans exploiting wetlands to relocate as directed by government or else they will face the wrath of the law.

Gen. Jim added that locals should learn to value wetlands and work hand in hand with government to restore the depleted wetlands.

Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata the Rukungiri district woman Member of Parliament narrated that it is high time for those people who encroach wetlands to vacate in a bid to avoid such instances to happen.

Hon. Natukunda urged the beneficiaries to use the donations accordingly by not selling them but rather use for the intended goals. She further called upon them to replant crops as early as possible to avoid future famine.

Geofrey Kyomukama the Rukungiri district chairperson LC5 thanked Hon. Jim Muhwezi on behalf of the government for lobbying such donation from Prime Minister’s office to help his electorates during this hard time.

Allen Tumusiime, Komugisha Speech and Mugisha Sylus some of beneficiaries thanked the government of President Museveni for thinking about them during this difficult requesting for more support since they lost whole of their properties.

In attendance was Deputy RDC Rukungiri Mr. Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, DISO Rukungiri district Mr. Christopher Wachaya, lc3 chairperson  Bwambara Sub County Mr. Chris Kagayano among others.

400 households benefited from the donation where each family was given 25kgs of beans and 50Kgs of Posho.
