NEWS– The president of the Republic of Uganda HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa has commissioned the project to construct the Standard Gauge railway.
President Museveni who commissioned the project of Standard Gauge Railway construction on Thursday 21st November, 2024 in Tororo District stressed that it is another right step towards rationalizing especially in the transport sector.
According to him, the recent debate in Parliament regarding rationalization questioning why are the Ministry of Transport and UNRA duplicating efforts can be addressed with such inefficiencies.
President Museveni noted that this railway therefore is part of rationalization and that the transport system is irrational.
“Roads are overcrowded with cars and cargo. This leads to slow movement, increased traffic, and damaged roads. To solve this, cargo must move to railways and waterways, while petroleum products will be transported through pipelines”, he added.
The construction of the Ugx 10.8 trillion Standard Gauge Railway will transform regional connectivity, linking Uganda to the Kenyan border and boosting trade across East Africa.
The 272km standard Gauge Railway will run from Malaba-Kampala (Eastern Route) in the Tororo District in Eastern Uganda.
