NEWS– The leader of opposition Hon. Joel Basekezi Ssenyonyi and his shadow cabinet have today 1st October 2024 visited the Mapeera Bakateyamba home to mark the international Day of older persons.
The Bakateyamba home found in Nalukolongo shelters many different people mostly the helpless aged and the disabled.
Ssenyonyi has called on the government to fund elderly homes noting that many residents are vulnerable and that these homes often managed by churches lack adequate financial support.
Hon. Fortunate Nantongo, the Shadow Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development has called for an increase in the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) from Ugx 25,000 to atleast Ugx 50,000.
The leader of opposition and his shadow cabinet among many things carried bags of rice, sugar, boxes of soap and jerrycans of cooking oil as a way of supporting the older persons.
The international Day of older persons is observed on 1st October of every year after it was voted on 14th December 1990 by the United Nations General Assembly and was first observed on 1st October 1991.
