EXCITING! Makerere University’s iconic Ivory Tower set to open after nearly 4 years

NEWS– The Makerere University’s iconic building known as the ivory tower is set to officially open again nearly after 4 years.

The iconic building is ready to rise again, after nearly four years of dedicated reconstruction following the devastating fire of 20th September 2020 that left it destructed.

The famous historic ivory tower will officially open its doors on 2th October 2024.

President Museveni and the First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni are expected to be at Makerere University to officially open the restored main building, commonly known as the Ivory Tower.

It is said that the government committed Ugx 21B for restoration of the historic main administration building of the university.

According to Barnabas Nawange, the Makerere University Vice chancellor the Ivory Tower’s exterior has been reconstructed to  to its original magnificence, massive interior changes reflecting modern designs and safety standards are evident.

He noted that the the building has been rebuilt with new technology like fire fighting and computers.

President Museveni is expected to re-open the building in an occasion at which he will also preside the installation of Dr Crispus Kiyonga as the new chancellor of Uganda’s oldest university. 

The iconic building had originally been constructed from the 1930s-1940s.
