Hon. Jim Muhwezi fulfills the pledge of fishing Licenses to Rwenshama community

RUKUNGIRI-Communities around Rwenshama Fish Landing Site on Lake Edward have been warned against unlawful and illegal fishing practices for the benefit of future generations.

This was revealed by the Rukungiri district chairperson LC5 Kyomukama Geofrey during the handover of Forty (40) Fishing Licenses to Rwenshama and Banyabutumbi communities respectively in a function that held on yesterday 27th September 2022 at Rwenshama fish landing Site in Bwambara Sub County Rukungiri district.

Speaking during the handover, Kyomukama said that they are receiving numerous information that some residents engage in illegal fishing activities including use of banned nets adding that this causes depletion of fish stock.

Kyomukama requested Rwenshama residents to work together and cooperate in something that would advance development in their community and the entire district.

During the handover of Fishing Licenses, Hajji Waswa Masokoyi the Rukungiri district Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) encouraged beneficiaries to utilize the licenses profitably in order to develop themselves.

Hajji Masokoyi calls on fishermen to observe savings discipline, desist from unnecessary expenses and trust amongst themselves if they are to thrive and become successful in their lives.

The Bwambara Sub County chairperson LC3 Mr. Chris Kagayano thanked the government of Uganda under the leadership of President Museveni for positively responding to the Rwenshama community outcry whereby they were denied access to their lake yet it is whre they survive from.

Kagayono added by encouraging beneficiaries to care and look after their licenses by following operational rules and regulations for their benefit.

The Rukungiri District Fisheries Officer thanked Rwenshama residents for being patient for over the last three years whereby the lake was only accessed by the Rwenshama Fish Company urging them to follow rules and regulations since they have been licensed.

Meanwhile on behalf of Rt. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi the Rujumbura County area legislator who lobbied the licenses from the government, Isaac Kaharuza narrated that they are fulfilling their pledges promised while soliciting votes from constituents.

Kaharuza said that during the 2021 General elections campaign, Hon Muhwezi realized that the Rwenshama community and Banyabutumbi were suffering since they were denied access to the lake, now calling for proper use to develop themselves.

Kizza Abdu and Nuwagaba Kenneth the area leaders thanked their area legislator Jim Muhwezi for rescuing the Rwenshama and Banyabutumbi residents from hardship life promising to fully utilize the fishing licenses and develop themselves.

Tumushabe Wilber and Twinobusingye Gideon some of the beneficiaries revealed that since have been permitted to access the lake, they will now be able to develop themselves through educating their children and eradicate from poverty.

Out of the 40 licenses, Rwenshama community was given 30 and other 10 were given to Banyabutumbi.
