Four people have been detained by the police in the Rwizi region on suspicion of stealing license plates.
One of the suspects is a student at Bishop Stuart University (BSU) named Conrad Mwiine, 24 years, who lives in the Rubiri cell in Nyamityobora ward.
The other suspects are Geoffrey Muhwezi, 27, who lives in the Rwentondo cell, Vincent Mwebesa, 25, who lives in the Rwentondo cell, and Bright Atwijukire, 22, who lives in Koranorya in Mbarara city.
The arrests of the suspects are the result of multiple vehicle number plate thefts that were reported to the Mbarara central police station and Ruti Police Station. The thieves leave a note on the car with their stolen plates, along with a phone number and instructions.
The arrest of the accused comes after multiple incidences of car number plate theft that were reported to the Mbarara Central Police Station and the Ruti Police Station, according to SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson.
Once the number plates are taken, the thieves leave a note with the owner’s phone number and instructions to deposit a certain amount of money if they wish to take back the automobile.
According to Kasasira, thirteen number plates were recovered as a result of the operation: UBD082J, UBH988P, CGO8317AF19, UAU 842E, UAF228S, UAN827K, UAY087H, UAT786Y, UBK141J, UAQ334S, UBG172G, UBN036Z, and UBH506J.The public is the indiscriminate target of the suspects.
The ring has been exposed on multiple occasions, with members being jailed; yet, upon their release from jail, they have continued their operations.
The police spokesperson verified that the six suspects had previously been arrested, and remanded to Mbarara Main prison.
