Rukungiri District is grappling with shock and concern following a brutal attack on Angello Twinomuhangi, an independent candidate aspiring for the LC5 chairperson position. The incident occurred on the night of January 6 in Nyarushanje, leaving Twinomuhangi fighting for his life and prompting urgent calls for community solidarity against violence.
In a press briefing held on January 7, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Bron Kikanshemeza detailed the harrowing events surrounding Twinomuhangi’s assault. The politician was discovered near River Mineera, having allegedly been attacked, tied up, and abandoned by unknown assailants. Upon his rescue, he was in critical condition, requiring oxygen support after being found with cloth stuffed in his mouth and his hands secured with USB cables.
Describing the circumstances of the attack, Kikanshemeza revealed that Twinomuhangi was located by Alphonse Byamukama, the head teacher of St. Jerome Ndama Secondary School. Byamukama was alerted by a boda boda rider who had seen the victim lying near the river. This timely intervention likely saved Twinomuhangi’s life, as he was rushed to Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale for immediate medical care.

According to Kikanshemeza, the assailants seemed to have intended to dispose of Twinomuhangi in the river but fled the scene, fearing detection by passersby returning from the nearby Mineera hot springs. The aspirant reportedly overheard his attackers saying, “Let’s dump him here because he is already dead,” highlighting the brutal nature of their intentions.

In light of this violent incident, Kikanshemeza issued a heartfelt plea to the community, urging residents to reject hatred and violence. “Life belongs to God alone,” he emphasized, expressing gratitude that Twinomuhangi survived what might have been a fatal encounter. He called for compassion and understanding, particularly in a time when tensions can run high.
The RDC also expressed concern over social media behavior in Rukungiri, cautioning against mocking or celebrating others’ suffering. “Compassion is necessary,” he reminded residents, stressing that death is a universal experience that should foster empathy rather than derision.
