The Rukungiri District disabled team has returned triumphantly after an inspiring eight-day journey at the Paralympic Games held at Muteesa Royal University in Masaka from October 10th to 18th. Comprising ten talented children from various primary and secondary schools across Rukungiri, the team achieved remarkable success, bringing home a total of 28 medals and three trophies.

The children participated in a range of events, including athletics and ball games, tailored to their specific disabilities. Their haul included gold, silver, and bronze medals, which not only highlighted their athletic prowess but also showcased Rukungiri’s strong representation at the games. Kembabazi Peace, the Education Officer for Special Needs in Rukungiri District, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the local government, parents, and headteachers for their unwavering support. She emphasized that their contributions—financially and morally—were crucial in enabling the children to participate.

In addition to competing, the children had the invaluable opportunity to meet healthcare professionals who assessed their disabilities and provided insights on how to improve their conditions. This aspect of the trip was particularly beneficial, offering the children not just a chance to showcase their talents but also guidance for their futures.

Despite their successes, Peace noted some significant challenges faced by the team. The low number of participants limited the potential for more medals, as each representative averaged two to three medals. Furthermore, she highlighted the pressing need for increased funding and better training facilities to help enhance their performance in future competitions.

Ainembabazi Davis, a student from St. Jerome Ndama SS, expressed his gratitude toward the Rukungiri District local government for their support. He shared an inspiring message, stating that disability should not be seen as a limitation. Despite his own challenges, Davis secured three medals, encouraging his peers to recognize their potential and strive for excellence.

Turyahumura Jackson, the District Education Officer, welcomed the team back at the District headquarters, praising their outstanding performance. He urged district leadership to continue supporting these children by raising funds for future events. Jackson encouraged parents and other children with disabilities to embrace their abilities, reiterating the belief that “disability is not inability.” He also thanked Hon. Mpimbi Bumari, the President of the Uganda Paralympic Committee, for providing wheelchairs to some participants, further empowering them to excel.

The achievements of the Rukungiri District disabled team at the Paralympic Games stand as a testament to resilience, talent, and the indispensable role of community support. Their journey not only showcases their capabilities but also highlights the need for ongoing assistance to empower children with disabilities to shine even brighter in the future.
