In a significant political development, Arinaitwe Frank Rukanirwa, the former aspirant for the Rujumbura MP seat, has officially announced his support for Hon. Jim Muhwezi.
The announcement was made during a meeting held at River Side Hotel in Rukungiri Municipality, attended by key figures in the NRM party, including First National NRM Vice Chairperson Alihaji Moses Kigongo, the Rukungiri District leadership, and various local leaders.
The gathering aimed to promote unity within the party as Rukanirwa reconciled with Major Gen. Jim Muhwezi, who is not only the Minister of Security but also the current MP and NRM flag bearer for the Rujumbura constituency. This reconciliation comes in the wake of a highly competitive election period marked by tension and rivalry between the two leaders.
Rukanirwa expressed his dedication to the NRM party and President Museveni, stating that his decision to support Muhwezi is rooted in respect for the party’s values. He thanked his supporters for their loyalty but stressed the importance of rallying behind NRM flag bearers for the greater good of the party.
“We must set aside our differences and work together for the progress of Rujumbura and the NRM,” Rukunirwa urged, calling for forgiveness from his supporters and Muhwezi, acknowledging that harsh words were exchanged during the election festivities.
In response, Major Gen. Jim Muhwezi expressed his gratitude to Rukanirwa for his unwavering commitment to the NRM party. He noted that Rukunirwa’s support would be crucial in ensuring that NRM candidates win decisively in the upcoming elections.
“With this unity, we can aim for a 100% victory in Rujumbura,” he declared, emphasizing that the strength of the party lies in its unity.
Muhwezi also announced that this term would be his last as an MP, promising to support Rukanirwa in the 2031 elections, reinforcing the notion of a collective future for the party.
“As I step aside for Frank today, I assure him of my support in the next elections. I will focus on serving the people personally, just as I did in the 1980s,” he affirmed.
Alihaji Moses Kigongo highlighted the importance of unity among party leaders, thanking the people of Rukungiri for their continued support of the NRM and President Museveni. He pointed out that elections can create divisions, but it is essential for both winning and losing sides to remain committed to the party.
“Division only empowers the opposition,” Kigongo warned, urging all members to prioritize the NRM party over individual candidates.
This reconciliation between Rukanirwa and Muhwezi signifies a crucial step toward strengthening the NRM’s foothold in Rujumbura. The leaders’ commitment to unity and collaboration aims to enhance the party’s prospects and ensure effective governance for their constituents.
As they embark on this new chapter, the focus remains on fostering a united front for the benefit of the NRM and its supporters.
