NEWS- The Police in Kakumiro district are investigating circumstances surrounding the tragic accident that caused the death of seven passengers.
The accident according Julius Allan Hakiza the Albertine Regional Police spokesman occurred on Monday morning, 3rd March 2025 at Kabale Swamp in Katikara Sub County, Kakumiro District.
The tragic incident according to Hakiza occurred along the Kakumiro-Hoima road and involved two vehicles a Toyota Wish registration number UBF 887M and a Toyota Hiace Drone Taxi registration number UBL 456M.
The driver of the Toyota Wish only identified as Roger, a resident of Kihuuna, Kakindo Sub County, died on the spot. Several other victims were rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where some reportedly succumbed to their injuries.
An eyewitness who only identified herself as Kyakutegekeire, the Toyota Wish driver (Roger) was heading towards Hoima City when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Drone Taxi, which was traveling towards Mubende, driven by Silaj Kugumisiriza Kahwa.
“The accident was caused by speeding and reckless overtaking,” Kyakutegekeire noted.
Sunday William, the district councilor for Katikara Sub County, expressed concern over the rising accident rates on the Kakumiro-Hoima highway.
“Just last evening, a Fuso truck collided with a motorcycle, killing two people. Speeding and reckless driving are the major causes of these tragic accidents,” he said.
He urged road users to exercise caution and prioritize safety to prevent further loss of lives.
Julius Hakiza, confirmed to the press that investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact number of fatalities.
“It’s true the accident happened, but we will provide updates to the media regarding the confirmed death toll,” Hakiza stated.
With the increasing number of fatal crashes in the region, authorities are urging drivers to avoid reckless overtaking, reduce speeding, and strictly follow traffic rules.
