NEWS– The General Court Martial at Makindye in Kampala has sentenced 16 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters to five years in prison after pleading guilty to treachery.
However, after mitigating factors, the convicts will serve three months and 22 days on remand.
The 16 National Unity Platform supporters are convicted of attempting to overthrow the Government of Uganda and possessing 13 pieces of bombs.
The court, chaired by Brig. Gen. Robert Freeman Mugabe took into account the over three years they had already spent on remand.
The group admitted to recruiting and training others to overthrow the government but expressed remorse, asking for pardon from President Museveni.
It should be remembered that the National Unity Platform accuses Hon. Minister Balam Barugahara, the state minister for youth and children affairs and the NRM government of hoodwinking the above 16 supporters to accepting to plead guilty of the offences they say they didn’t commit.
