As Rukungiri District gears up to welcome the New Year, security officials are urging residents to exercise caution regarding the use of fireworks. This advisory comes from the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and the District Police Commander (DPC) as the countdown to 2026 begins.
Speaking today, the Senior Superintendent of Police Brains Ampiire outlined the specific measures that must be followed by those wishing to light fireworks. He emphasized that safety is paramount and that any individual or organization planning a fireworks display must adhere to the established guidelines.
Ampaire stated one of the key requirements as that organizers must obtain clearance from the District Operations Commander’s (DOC) office before proceeding, he added that all fireworks must be securely stored at Rukungiri Central Police Station. The DPC’s office has been instructed to monitor the suitability of venues designated for fireworks. Failure to comply with these guidelines can result in the cancellation of the fireworks display.

Furthermore, Ampiire stressed that only licensed operators should handle fireworks. This measure is crucial for ensuring the safety of both participants and spectators. “We cannot stress enough how important it is to have valid licenses for firework operators,” he noted.
The DPC also addressed another critical concern: celebratory gunfire. He urged armed personnel, including police officers, not to shoot into the air during celebrations, as it poses serious health risks to community members.
In addition, Ampiire cautioned the public against reckless activities that could endanger lives, particularly among bodaboda riders and drivers who may drive dangerously in their excitement. He also warned against burning tires on the roads, highlighting the disruptions this causes, especially near sensitive locations like hospitals and schools.
RDC Bron Kikanshemeza expressed gratitude for the peaceful Christmas season so far. He reminded residents that true celebration goes beyond reckless behavior. “We must find safe, responsible ways to enjoy the festivities,” he urged, stressing the need for caution and responsibility.
