NEWS police in Buvuma are investigating circumstances surrounding the drowning of 2 minors after a boat they were using to catch fish capsized in Lake Victoria, Buvuma district
The minors were identified as Isaac Wanyama, 10, and Paul Wonda, 8, both children of Agnes Nakanda, a resident of Buvuma district.
The Buvuma district Lake Victoria Natural Resources Management Brigade spokesperson, Nickson Matia Ochieng confirmed the incident noting that the minors were using a condemned boat to catch fish which was blown by a strong wind.
Ochieng said the boat was dismantled by water and overturned, leaving the two dead.
Ochieng urged parents to take extra care of their children especially during this holiday to avoid similar deaths suspected to be out of negligence.
In another separate incident Police at Kira Division is investigating circumstances surrounding drowning of a 12-year-old boy and a diver in a stream in two separate incidents in Kijabijjo, Kira Municipality in Wakiso district.
The first incident occurred on Wednesday, November 23, when Ssentezza Joel, 12, had gone swimming with other children and unfortunately, drowned in the stream. Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said’’
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire It’s alleged that the children that survived rushed and informed their parents who mobilized efforts to find the body of the deceased but they could not find it on the first day.
Owoyesigyire adds that On Thursday, as the search intensified, Charles Kasaga Kiwanuka, 40, who had entered the same stream to help find the drowned child also drowned in the process.
He revealed that a search was mounted by volunteers to find the bodies of the deceased persons and the first victim was found.
Police divers were called to help search for the body of the second victim yesterday but in vain. The search for the body is still ongoing.
Peter Musoke, a resident of Kijabijjo, said they received the news of the drowning with shock which raises concern about the safety of children during this long holiday season which runs until early February 2023.
Owoyesigyire advised parents to be vigilant as their children are now back from school, playing and swimming in unsafe and unsupervised places should be prohibited and children warned against it.
