Few days after a principal at Karoli Lwanga School of Nursing and Midwifery Nyakibale brutally assaulted two students, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner’s office RDC and police have picked up the matter.
A video of this incident went viral on social media platforms in which the Principal identified as Birungyi Florence was seen beating the third year and finalist student using a wooden stick and the assault continued despite the student crying and begging the principal to stop.
Yesterday Tuesday 11th October 2022, Deputy RDC Rukungiri Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, OC Crime Intelligence Rukungiri and other officers went to the institute to investigate the matter.
Fortunately, the assaulted students were seen still alive, wrote statements from them and police took them for medical checkups.
Speaking with our reporter, Namara Evalyne and Amutuhaire Alicia the victims of the case revealed that they were doing an entrepreneurship paper of the final exams and as they were winding up, the deputy principal told them to handover papers but unfortunately, as Namara was holding a paper, deputy principal thought she was showing Alicia answers and she immediately took them to principal’s office saying they were copying.
Students added that the situation was such that other students also got scared yet it was not true that they were copying.
Our reporter contacted other students from the institute and they revealed that on several occasions, they are beaten like cows requesting that at least the habit should stop since they are mature people and respected by the public.
However, the Nyakibale School of Nursing and Midwife Principal and the accused Birungyi Florence accepted to have done a case as simple punishment in a way other students can fear doing the same.
Speaking with the Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner DRDC Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, the Nyakibale Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Felix Adriko Pierre narrated that they are doing what it takes as administration to handle the issue.
Meanwhile Ongom condemned corporal punishments in institutions saying that as students, they also deserve their rights like other Ugandans.
