Rukungiri Municipality has taken a significant step towards eradicating child labour in the coffee supply chain with the launch of the Elimination of Child Labour in Agriculture (ECLA) program. The event, held at the Rukungiri District Council Hall, was spearheaded by Principal Community Development Officer (PCDO) Mr. Twesigomwe Johnbosco and attended by key district stakeholders, including the District Community Development Department and various technical teams.

The initiative aims to address the pressing issue of child labour in the coffee sector by collaborating closely with local governments, communities, and implementing partners such as Tuton. It will extend its reach to sub-counties, including Buyanja, Kebisoni, Nyakishenyi, Nyarushanje, Buhunga, Bwambara, Bugangari, and Ruhinda.

Mr. Twesigomwe emphasized the municipality’s commitment to the cause, highlighting the urgent need for community sensitization and the enforcement of local by-laws to safeguard vulnerable children. He stated, “ECLA must intensify grassroots sensitization efforts and work with our structures to ensure lasting impact,” reiterating the municipality’s support for the program.

ECLA’s multifaceted approach includes raising awareness, advocacy, and sharing best practices to reduce child labour at both district and national levels. The program aims to empower households in coffee-growing areas by improving access to financial resources, enhancing income management skills, and ensuring children remain in school.

During the launch, Executive Director Edie Wambewo outlined the forms of hazardous child labour prevalent in the region, such as the use of chemicals without protective gear, underage domestic work, early marriages, and unsafe sanitation tasks. He identified root causes like food insecurity and domestic violence as critical factors contributing to the issue.

The event concluded with Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Mr. Agaba Hillary commending all stakeholders for their dedication. He stressed the importance of transforming the lives of children who might otherwise fall into exploitative labour, especially during school holidays.

With a unified commitment from Rukungiri Municipal Council and district leadership, the initiative is set to make a tangible impact on the rights and futures of children in the region.
