KAMPALA- The donors that have been funding the projects of feeding refugees in Uganda have notified plans to end the financial aid in three months, after which, Government will be required to shoulder the financial obligation of feeding all refugees in Uganda.
The revelation was made by Kasule Lumumba, Minister of General Duties at the Office of the Prime Minister, while appearing before Parliament’s Presidential Affairs Committee where she led the team from OPM in presenting the 2025/26 ministerial policy statement for the entity.
Hellen Auma the Busia district woman MP expressed concerns over the increasing number of refugees in Uganda and asked the OPM to explain the modalities being put in place to deal with this expansion.
Alex Byarugaba, Chairperson Presidential Affairs Committee tasked the OPM officials to reveal the plans in place to avert the looming crisis of shortage of food for refugees.
Ronald Balimwezo the Nakawa east Mp faulted Government for failing to manage refugees in Kampala, which has led to the increase in prices of accommodation especially in areas like Kansanga, Gaba which has forced Ugandans to abandon their homes for Eritreans and Ethiopians who seem to have more money than the locals.
In the coming financial year 2025/26, the Office of Prime Minister has been allocated Shs154.508Bn out of which Shs6.16 billion is for payment of wages, while Shs130.2 billion is for non-wage recurrent and then Shs5.47 billion is for development, while additional Shs12.208Bn is from external funding.
In a separate development, the National Council of Sports says that its using 508 billion shillings provided by the government to urgently complete the two sports stadia under construction to host the AFCON 2027 as planned.
This was revealed by the Secretary General of the National Council of Sports (NCS) Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, while appearing before the parliamentary committee on education and sports together with the Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang to present the Council’s policy statement for the financial year 2025/26-2029.
Dr.Ogwel told the committee that work in progress to complete the construction of Hoima and Aki Bua stadiums to host the AFCON 2027 as planned and roofing of Hoima stadium has started and in mid-June will be done so that its finished in time to host AFCON 2027.
He said that part of these funds is being used to construct nine training sports facilities at Makerere University, kyambogo university, FUFA kadiba stadium in Rubaga, Renovation of wankulukuku stadium among others.
He commended the government for its support towards the development of the sports facilities in the country.
