KAMPALA- A section of members of Parliament is calling on President Yoweri Museveni to apologize and revoke his decision forcing medical interns to facilitate themselves during internship time. This was after the president proposed that medical students’ sponsors during the five years should also take responsibility for funding their one-year internships.
The president suggested this after almost a full year of controversy surrounding medical interns’ non-deployment, which sparked strikes and protests. According to reports, deployed medical interns, including doctors, pharmacists, and nurses, were earning a net monthly allowance of Shs 2.5 million to facilitate their feeding and accommodation.
Buikwe South MP Lulume Bayiga and Nakaseke South MP Lutamaguzi Ssemakula say that the president should revoke his suggestion and apologise to Ugandans stressing that the Country has enough resources to support these interns as seen on other expenditures made by the government to support privately owned projects.
Lulume said that Parliament has to recommend the reversal of the proposed president policy on medical interns.
Nakaseke south legislator Luttamaguzi ssemakula explained that the statement made by the president against the interns was uncalled for.
