GHANA-Mobile Money Agents under their umbrella in Ghana have decided to embark on an industrial action on Thursday 23, December 2021 over the 1.75 per cent electronic transaction charges (e-levy) announced by the Government.
According to a statement released by the Mobile Money Agents’ Association of Ghana, the the1.75% E-Levy that the government is attempting to impose on their services will be inimical to their business.
The association explained that it intends to send a strong message of disapproval to the government by ensuring all mobile money shops are closed on Thursday.
The E-levy was proposed in the 2022 budget by finance minister Ken Offori Atta which is to be charged on all digital money transactions above 100 cedis.
The Minority has proposed lowering the charge to one per cent and raising the transaction threshold to GH¢300.
Meanwhile, a Fiscal Policy Specialist at Oxfam, Dr. Alex Ampabeng, told our reporter in an interview that the introduction of the e-Levy was inimical to the digitisation and cashless systems the government was championing.
