Parents of Kashenyi Secondary School in Ruhinda Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have agreed to hold a fundraising event on March 13, 2027, to raise money to complete the girls’ dormitory, currently at ground-floor level. The decision was reached during the school’s Annual General Meeting held on the school premises.

The project is intended to ease overcrowding among girls currently housed in small hostels and provide space for enrollment growth. Kinombe Nyaruzinga Construction Company is undertaking the construction, which is estimated to cost UGX 673,117,000. The fundraising will support completion of the facility, which has so far reached the ground-floor stage.

Headteacher Rev. Ivan Mwongyera said Kashenyi has 1,209 students, placing pressure on its existing facilities. He said the school needs more dormitories and classrooms, as well as an Information Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory, science laboratory and library, to improve students’ learning conditions.

Despite these needs, Mwongyera reported progress this year, including access to safe drinking water, regular learner assessments and support for O-Level and A-Level candidates. The school has installed security lights around its compound, purchased a generator and constructed a gravity-fed water supply system, he said.

PTA Vice Chairperson John Arineitwe said parents had agreed to make the girls’ dormitory their priority before pursuing development projects. Future plans include a boys’ dormitory, a modern kitchen and a science laboratory. He appealed to well-wishers, former students, politicians and other stakeholders to support the March fundraiser.

Arineitwe said contributions would help improve infrastructure and create a conducive learning environment. Parents were urged to pay at least 50 per cent of school fees at the beginning of each term to prevent disruptions to students’ studies.

Former Kashenyi students were encouraged to join the Kashenyi Old Boys and Old Girls Association, whose members have already donated 272 bags of cement toward the ongoing dormitory construction.
