Rukungiri District has today, October 26, 2026, commenced the distribution of 229,500 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to households across the district and Rukungiri Municipality, in a renewed effort to protect residents against malaria, following a Ministry of Health directive.

The distribution comes three months after the consignment was officially flagged off on July 22, 2026, with Village Health Teams (VHTs) now receiving the mosquito nets for delivery to residents in their respective communities. The exercise was launched at the Eastern Division headquarters in Rukungiri, where VHTs received bales of mosquito nets to distribute to beneficiaries in their areas.

The consignment comprises 4,590 bales, each containing 50 mosquito nets, intended for distribution across 105 parishes in Rukungiri District and Rukungiri Municipality, with allocations based on the population of each parish.

Before the commencement of today’s distribution the Rukungiri District Health Educator Dr Aliban Natukunda explained that the Village Health Teams (VHTs) underwent training last Tuesday to prepare them for the exercise and ensure the nets reach the intended beneficiaries. The distribution exercise is expected to run for two days citing that every household will receive.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Eastern Division, Gashom Twesigye, called on residents to make proper use of the mosquito nets provided by the government to prevent malaria as they await other government programmes.

Among other distribution centers like in Nyabubare Buhunga Subcounty a total of 200 nets were distributed to 101 households where the Chairperson LC I Mwesigwa Jackson indicated that the distribution was going well but there was a mess in finding some people not registered and some other households received less numbers due of nets compared to what was registered.

Uganda periodically conducts mass distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets through the Ministry of Health and its development partners as part of efforts to reduce malaria infections and deaths, particularly among children and pregnant women.

Health officials continue to encourage households to sleep under the nets consistently to maximize protection against malaria.
