Residents from villages of Nyakatembe, Burera and Rwembogo in Bwambara and Nyakagyeme Sub Counties respectively Rukungiri district have a reason to smile after gaining access to safe and clean water, ending a long time of depending on contaminated water sources.
This breakthrough follows the commissioning of three boreholes, a result of lobbying efforts by Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, the Rujumbura County Member of Parliament from Nile Humanitarian Development Agency, a non-governmental organization.
Speaking during the commissioning, residents and local leaders said that for years, they have been collecting water from open wells, sharing it with animals, and exposing their families to waterborne diseases.
Victoria Nyamwazutu, July Molly and Josephine Kamariza some of the residents narrated that with these new water sources, they anticipate improved hygiene and a reduction in disease outbreaks.
Muhoozi Deus, vice chairperson LC1 Rwembogo cell in Rushasha Parish Nyakagyeme Sub County explained that his village lacked water sources forcing residents to share dirty water sources with animals, putting their lives at risk.
