Rukungiri District Local Government has welcomed the central government’s decision to take over Rubabo Road, pledging to redirect local funds towards improving other roads and infrastructure across the district. District leaders credited the swift response to a council resolution to the government and Rubabo County Member of Parliament Hon. Mwesigwa Mathias Rwabugumi.

Rukungiri District Council Speaker Hon. Albert Ahabwe Mugisha Rwamugaata said maintaining the road had placed pressure on the district’s limited budget. He said upkeep of the route had cost more than 30 million, restricting the local government’s ability to maintain other roads and worsening transport challenges.

Rwamugaata said councillors passed a resolution asking the central government to assume responsibility for the road but were surprised by how quickly it acted. The 28-kilometre road is now expected to be tarmacked under the Ministry of Works and Transport, he said.

The takeover, according to the speaker, should ease the district’s maintenance burden and allow funds previously spent on Rubabo Road to be allocated to other routes. He said a paved road would improve transport and trade, making journeys easier between Rukungiri Municipality, Kisizi and communities across Rubabo.

He urged residents to cooperate with contractors and avoid interfering with construction. He warned that the project should not be obstructed and cautioned against the destruction of project property there will be no compasession.

Poor road conditions due to spending much on Rubabo road have long concerned residents and traders who rely on the route to reach services and markets. District officials said improving the wider road network remains a priority, and funds freed by the takeover will support that work.
