NEWS- The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has delivered food relief to Rukungiri Municipality, which was hit by hailstorms triggered by heavy rains.
The delivery was made yesterday 31st March 2025, after it was reported by Rukungiri municipality Member of Parliament and other Municipal leaders that 1225 households were in dire need and their properties and food supplies were destroyed, prompting a swift response from the OPM.
In February and March 2025, hailstorms destroyed crops such as banana plantations, cassava, maize, beans and peas among others causing food shortage in Rukungiri Municipality.
According to Karenzi Paul, the Deputy Town Clerk Rukungiri municipality who is also spearheading the distribution of the relief food to affected families, the delivery consisted of 6122 kilograms of maize flour and 6122 kilograms of beans.
Karenzi confirmed that the distribution will commence tomorrow Wednesday, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
He said that the beneficiaries are drawn from wards of Karangaro, Kitimba and some from Northern A all in Western division Rukungiri Municipality.

Receiving the relief food at Rukungiri municipal headquarters, Rukungiri Municipality MP Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa revealed that the gesture from OPM is aimed at restoring hope and nourishment to those dealing with the effects of the hailstorm in the area.
Hon. Rutahigwa said that these food items are meant to help affected residents recover from the losses caused by the hailstorm urging them to use them wisely as they rebuild their livelihoods.
He emphasized that the relief was specifically intended for hailstorm victims and encouraged fairness in its distribution.
