Abaho Rogers has officially announced his candidacy as an independent candidate in the upcoming general elections, following dissatisfaction with the results of the NRM primary elections. The former aspiring district councilor for Nyakagyeme sub county in Rujumbura constituency, Rukungiri District, made the announcement during a press conference, where he expressed his determination to represent the voices of the people who feel marginalized by the current political system.
Rogers’s decision comes in the wake of widespread discontent among several candidates who feel that the NRM primary elections were marred by malpractice, particularly allegations of voter bribery. In the primary election, Rogers lost by a narrow margin of 284 votes, securing 1,521 votes against his opponent’s 1,811. Rogers criticized the electoral process, stating that it’s disheartening to witness voters being bribed with money at polling stations stressing that such tactics undermine our democracy and the will of the people.
His announcement resonates with a growing trend across Uganda, where many disillusioned candidates are opting for independent tickets. This shift reflects a larger dissatisfaction with the electoral process, as various aspirants, including members of parliament, have voiced their grievances about the integrity of the elections. Rogers believes that his independent run will provide an opportunity to challenge the status quo and advocate for a transparent electoral system.
In his address, Rogers Abaho expressed deep appreciation for his supporters, coordinators, and agents who stood by him during the previous elections. He emphasized his commitment to empowering the people of Nyakagyeme through initiatives aimed at enhancing income-generating skills. “I am dedicated to uplifting our community by providing skills that can boost household incomes and promote sustainable development,” he said.
Rogers also called on the Ugandan government to take decisive action against electoral malpractices calling for the implementation of educational programs that encourage candidates to earn votes based on their visions and manifestos rather than resorting to financial inducements. He proposed strict penalties for those involved in voter bribery, stating that there is a need to create an environment where voters can choose leaders based on merit and integrity.
As the general elections approach, Rogers urged his supporters to remain vigilant and united in their quest for a fair electoral process. He encouraged collaboration among dissatisfied voters to protect their democratic rights and work towards uplifting Nyakagyeme. With a vision for a transformed community, Abaho Rogers aims to instill hope and mobilize citizens in pursuit of a brighter political future.
