KAMPALA-Security minister who doubles as Rujumbura Constituency Member of Parliament hon Maj Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu has contributed Ugx20m towards the purchase of land to construct Rwerere Health Center III.
This happened on Sunday 28/11/2022 after a thanksgivings function that took place at Hotel Africana in Kampala organised by the people of Rwerere living in Kampala.
The minister lauded the organisers for their commitment towards the development of town council.Hon Jim welcomed the idea of dividing the said land into plots that has helped the people of Rwerere to contribute for the cause.
He noted that Rwerere town council is facing a challenge of lagging behind because it was bypassed by the road connection. He however reminded the people how he lobbied for Rukungiri town council in the cabinet through the former minister for local government Adolf Mwesige that made it to become a town council among other town councils in the district including; Buyanja, Kebisoni and Bikurungu..
The Rwerere Town Council Health Inspector Henry Muhwezi, noted that the town council was elevated to a town council status in 2018 and currently has a total population of 4,300 people, with 9 cells and 3 wards.
According to Henry Muhwezi Rwerere town council is the only one in the district that does not have a Health Center III and in accordance with government policy each town council should have a Health Center Ill.
However, the funds for the construction of a Health Centre III have always been released from the central government and returned back due to lack of land for construction.
Henry stressed, there has been several challenges faced by community in the town council. which includes; the lack of free antenatal services for pregnant women and immunization of children under five years age, lack of T.B screening and treatment since the only NGO facility in place is not accredited for TB services.
There is also lack of access to free services offered at government health facilities especially; health Education, laboratory services, regular checkups of blood pressure and sugar levels among others.
Catherine Tumusiime, the Rwerere Town Council mayor said that they were able to raise a total of Ugx50m both in cash and pledges out of the Ugx90 required to buy the 3acres needed to house the Health center.
She added that as the community they had already raised some funds and they are assured that now the land will be bought.
