At the recent North Kigezi Diocesan Annual Youth and Students Convention , Honourable Major General Jim Muhwezi Katuguugu the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura county in Rukungiri District and also the Minister for security, urged young people to prioritize their health, particularly in protecting themselves from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This pivotal message was delivered during the closing ceremony of the three-day conference held at Makobole High School grounds, where youth from various churches in the North Kigezi diocese gathered to engage in meaningful discussions.
Representing the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni, Major General Muhwezi invoked a sense of responsibility among the youth. He cautioned against engaging in sexual intercourse before marriage, emphasizing the importance of waiting until they are mature and prepared for the commitments of married life.
“The decisions you make today can affect your future. Stay away from behaviors that could jeopardize your health and life goals,” he urged. He also encouraged the youth to support the government, highlighting initiatives such as immunization and Universal Primary Education that have significantly improved the lives of Ugandans. “The government has created an environment for growth, and it’s crucial for the youth to engage in safeguarding that progress,” he stated.
Bishop Onesmus Asiimwe, who graced the event, expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic participation of the youth. He reinforced the conference’s theme, “Move on,” taken from Exodus 14:15, calling on young people to protect their lives and turn away from destructive habits, including fornication, which can lead to STIs.
Bishop Asiimwe emphasized the importance of spiritual growth, urging participants to seek forgiveness from God and remain focused on their goals. “Let your faith guide you towards a brighter future,” he encouraged.
The convention concluded with a renewed commitment from the youth to prioritize their health and future while supporting their communities and the government’s efforts for development.
