In an effort to improve access to power, PAGO Uganda Limited, a non-governmental organization, on Sunday 2rd July 2023 unveiled the Mitaano Hydro Power Dam in Rukungiri district.
Ivan Karau Kisembo, the project engineer, predicts that the Ugx. 90 billion dam will increase access to electricity in a number of Western Ugandan districts, including Rukungiri, Kanungu, Ntungamo, and Kabale, among others.
The project started with the construction of a 12.4 kilometer access road from Biraara Bridge, which connects Kanungu with the Rukungiri district, to Mitaano Bridge in the Rwerere Town Council where an electricity-generating dam would be built.
Asiimwe Faith, who spoke on behalf of PAGO Uganda Limited Propriators during the launch, asked locals to support the project because it will fundamentally alter their way of life.
According to engineer Ivan Karau Kisembo, the project will produce 13.6 MW of electricity, which will be sufficient to power the designated districts.
Insisting on cooperation and support from the community for the project’s success, he stated that it will be finished in three years.
According to Eng. Kisembo, approximately 1400 people would be directly engaged by the project, which will be carried out in twelve villages from the Nyakagyeme Sub County and the Rwerere Town Council.
He urged the community to cooperate till the project is finished.
The mayor of Rwerere town council, Tumusiime Catherine, urged her constituents to take advantage of the chance to better their quality of life.
Tumusiime requested that PAGO Uganda Limited give locals first priority when offering employment possibilities since they will benefit right away.
The Nyakagyeme Sub County Chairperson LC3 Mr. Mubangyizi Godson urged his people to establish small businesses alongside the road and advance themselves on the newly built access route.
