NEWS– Education authorities in Kanungu district are concerned with the increasing cases of school dropouts, early marriages and domestic cases in the district.

This was on 21st November 2024 revealed by Shaban Adam, the Kanungu District Education Officer during an open day event at Mukono Primary School in Mukono Cell, Southern Ward, Buhoma Town Council, Kanungu district.

Shaban who believes these issues are significantly impacting educational progress and hindering the potential for a brighter future for the children called upon parents to prioritize education and work together to address the said challenges.

He applauded the school’s efforts in improving academic performance and constructing new classrooms but emphasized the need for increased parental involvement to ensure that children stay in school.

The DEO urged parents to stay actively involved in their children’s education, stating, “This world is on a wheel, cycling itself, and if you don’t move with it, you risk falling behind in misery.” He encouraged children to uphold discipline, respect their elders, nurture their faith, and stay away from negative peer influences to excel in school.

The head teacher, Babirisa Enos highlighted the challenges such as a high pupil-to-teacher ratio and inadequate infrastructure appealing to the government for support in addressing these issues.

Reverend Canon Stella Arinaitwe, the Diocesan Education Coordinator for Kinkizi Diocese, emphasized the importance of parental involvement in monitoring children’s progress, providing necessary scholastic materials and fostering open communication to effectively address any obstacles learners may face.

Mukono Primary School also expressed gratitude towards several organizations for their valuable support in providing scholastic materials, financial assistance and contributing to development projects at the school.
