Residents of Kagarama Town Council in Ntungamo District are pleading for government assistance following extensive damage to their crops and property caused by heavy rainfall earlier this week.

The torrential downpour has devastated local agriculture, destroying key crops such as bananas, cassava, and potatoes. Additionally, many homes were reported damaged.

Ephraim Bankurateire, the chairperson of the LC1 of Ruhabo Cell in Rutunguru Ward, emphasized the significant losses faced by the community, particularly stressing the impact on banana plantations, which serve as a vital source of income for many families.

In response to the crisis, residents have submitted formal requests to the office of the LC5 councilor, seeking government support for their recovery.

“The loss of our main source of income is devastating,” Bankurateire stated. “We urgently need assistance to survive this situation.”

Nabaasa Emily Nice, the LC5 councilor for Kagarama Town Council, confirmed that the heavy rains had not only affected crops but also damaged houses and even churches throughout the area. She noted that all villages within the council had been impacted by the adverse weather conditions, which included strong winds and snow.

“Everyone in the town council has felt the effects of this disaster,” Nabaasa remarked. “We have encouraged affected individuals to complete forms for government assistance. In the meantime, it is important for residents to be patient and use their remaining food resources sparingly.”

The local community is hopeful for prompt government intervention to aid their recovery efforts and restore normalcy in the wake of this natural disaster.
