President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has hailed nurses and midwives for their lifesaving efforts and personal sacrifices amid increased medical risk.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni made the revelation today during International Day celebrations for Nurses and Midwives held in Rukungiri district in main stadium whereby he was represented by his vice Rt. Maj. Jesca Alupo.
In his address to the congregation, the vice president expressed gratitude to nurses and midwives for making sure the sick are taken care of until their conditions return to normal.
Alupo made a call to action on behalf of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for the medical community as a whole to engage in revenue-generating projects in order to improve the financial standing of families and the nation.
Vice President Alupo congratulated the people of Rukungiri for their overwhelming support of NRM in general elections of 2021 and asked them to continue in similar spirit in the general election of 2026.
President Museveni thanked Rukungiri residents for maintaining peace and security which is important for the country’s progress.
Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, the minister of security and a member of parliament representing Rujumbura County, congratulates nurses and midwives on these celebrations and urges them to continue serving the country with love during the same occasion.
In an effort to bring healthcare closer to the public, Minister Jim Muhwezi stated that the government plans to upgrade all health centers from (II) to (III) status.
Additionally, he stated that since government salaries have increased, every Sub County should have a doctor to improve health services.
He added that NRM performed excellently in last general elections describing the party’s performance as the biggest breakthrough comparing to 2016 general elections.
The woman Member of Parliament for Rukungiri district, Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata, expressed gratitude to the government for its policies of providing ambulances to all of Uganda’s constituencies.
She noted that the district has received two ambulances in Rujumbura and the municipality, and that one more ambulance is on its way to Rubabo County.
While the Bugangari Health Center (IV) needs beds and mattresses, Hon. Natukunda commended the government for expanding the maternity unit and promised to follow through as leaders to find a solution.

According to Mr. Geoffrey Kyomukama, the chairperson of Rukungiri district, the district’s inability to provide health services is hampered, among other things, by the absence of a district hospital, insufficient medical personnel, a dearth of staff housing, and inadequate transportation.
Speaking at the same event, Cherop Justus, the president of Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union (UNMU), criticized local governments for frequently detaining nurses and midwives anytime a patient’s life is in danger.
Additionally, Cherop demanded that the health sector be centralized, arguing that the working conditions at local governments are unfavourable to healthcare professionals.
