RUKUNGIRI- Residents of Rukungiri district have been urged to embrace the new government initiative of Parish Development Model (PDM) in the fight against poverty.
The call was made by the Minister for Security, who is also the Rujumbura Constituency Member of Parliament Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi during his ongoing Baraza meetings aimed to discuss development projects and new initiatives by the government.
The 2nd Baraza meeting was convened yesterday at Bucence Church of Uganda and at Nyakagyeme Sub County headquarters respectively where residents from parishes of Kigaaga, Kitimba and Kabwoma all in Nyakagyeme Sub County were in attendance.
Addressing the residents, Minister Jim Muhwezi disclosed that PDM’s main goal is to ensure the livelihoods of Ugandans improve.
Hon. Jim Muhwezi announced government plans to increase PDM funding from 100 to Shs 200 million shillings for each parish. Muhwezi urged residents of Rujumbura County and Rukungiri district at large to actively participate in PDM explaining that the money government is putting in the program is meant to help fight poverty among people.
He also urged people to change their mindset, engage in the money economy in order to improve their household income.

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Rukungiri district, Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen, asked those who took money to pay it back then in near future, they can start up a commercial bank at Parish level.

The Rukungiri district Principal Commercial Officer Atuheire Caroline said that as a district, they have 75 PDM SACCOs and each has so far received 250M shillings.
Atuheire expressed gratitude to Minister Jim Muhwezi for organizing such Barazas which enable them to discuss service delivery to people as technocrats.
