RUKUNGIRI-Fuel siphoning has stalled progress of works along Rukungiri-Kanungu-Ishasha road that is being tarmacked.

This was revealed by Chen Fergving the manager of CHICO Company Limited which was contracted to take on the project during impromptu visit by the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nsubuga Bewayo Stephen and District Internal Security Officer Christopher Wachaya who were monitoring the current status of work.

While updating the RDC and DISO on the current status of the road, Fergving explained that fuel siphoning has been a major challenge to their project stressing that most people involved in this habit are from outside Kanungu and Rukungiri Districts.

He added that as the company, they are working hand in hand with stakeholders to get more man power and acquire machines so that the project can be completed before this year ends.

Nsubuga and Wachaya also met the Rukungiri-Kanungu-Ishasha road UNRA engineer Ronald Sebirumi who told them that the delay to compensate locals has also hindered the project progress. Sebirumi noted that residents can’t allow the continuity of the work before being compensated yet their land was valued.

He said that sometimes the delay to compensate some people results from areas affected by family wrangles, lands with court issues among many other challenges.

Sebirumi adds that even heavy rains experienced in the area are also challenging to their project since the employees must take a break for days after the down powers.

RDC Bewayo assured all people whose land was valued and have not been compensated to be patient as government prepares to release their money stressing that this should not hinder the continuity of the work that benefits all people.

Nsubuga warned that whoever falls a victim of fuel siphoning or any project property stealing will face it rough for hindering progress of government program.

The 78.5km Rukungiri-Kanungu-Ishasha road tarmacking project which was supposed to cost Ugx 207.8Bn kicked off in 2018 and was supposed to be completed in three years.
