A shocking incident unfolded on the night of January 25, 2026, when the driver and conductors of a Star Link bus, carrying nearly 80 passengers, vanished after the vehicle encountered mechanical problems in Rukungiri municipality. The bus, registered under number UAU 474M, was traveling from Kanuungu to Kampala when it broke down near the Rukungiri Municipal Council headquarters around 9 PM.
According to reports, passengers had paid their fares in full and received receipts before boarding the bus. Tumwesigye Jackson, one of the travelers, recounted that everything seemed normal until the moment the bus developed a block. “We were just sitting there, waiting, and then they vanished,” he said, expressing his frustration over the lack of communication.

The sudden departure of the bus crew left passengers bewildered and desperate for guidance. With no information on how to continue their journey, many began to panic. Passengers voiced their concerns, threatening to burn the abandoned bus in protest. In response, the District Police Commander (DPC) deployed traffic and police officers to the scene to calm the situation and protect the vehicle.
As the night wore on, the stranded passengers grew increasingly anxious. By morning, with no sign of either the bus crew or assistance, they decided to approach the Rukungiri Central Police around 8 AM. Among those seeking help were elderly passengers, such as 79-year-olds Benon Matabaaro Gauda Kosiranta and Volonica Kapere of 79-year-old, both from Butogota Kayonza, who were also trying to reach Kampala.

In a bid to restore order, DPC ASP Brians Ampaire stepped in and arranged for a Kasaaba bus to transport the stranded passengers to their destination. “We need to ensure that everyone gets to their destination safely,” Ampaire stated, emphasizing the importance of passenger safety as they continue to monitor where the drive is.
As of now, the original bus remains unaccounted for, along with the passengers’ fare money, leaving many questioning the company’s reliability. Ampaire urged travelers to always choose transport services they are familiar with to avoid such incidents in the future.
This incident raises critical questions about safety in public transportation and the accountability of service providers. As passengers across Uganda reflect on this harrowing experience, it serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of vigilance and the need for trustworthy transport options.
