Residents of Bikurungu Town Council, Rukungiri district say a previously closed road in Kanyankwanzi cell is being shut again, and they are awaiting an official reopening. The issue came to light during a Parents-Teachers General Meeting held at Bikurungu Seed School, that opened on16th February 2026 to begin teaching for the first term
During the meeting, several residents like Ngabirano Ephraim,Ashaaba Gershom and oyinebye Lydia reported difficulties for their children to go at school and for community members who need to reach medical facilities and other services. They alleged that Mr. Rubanzana Muhumuza has a history of closing access routes near his land and that the most recent opening of the road coincided with preparations for the new seed school, after which the road was closed again. They said phone calls to Mr. Muhumuza have gone unanswered.

LC1 Chairperson Turyatunga Fred of Kanyankwanzi cell, in the Eastern Ward of Bikurungu Town Council, expressed his concern to the meeting attendees. He noted that residents were given assurances that the way would be opened, but that it has since been closed, and he stated the community was prepared to pursue formal channels if needed. He indicated that residents intended to draft a letter requesting the road be opened, and warned that if there was no compliance, legal action would be considered.

In the same meeting, officials announced the acting Headteacher for Bikurungu Seed School, as the government continues to appoint a full-time head. Miss Getrida Nembaga Byamukama, who has been Appointed and previously served in several other institutions, said she would bring her experience to Bikurungu Seed School and promised to work toward delivering quality education for learners. She thanked parents for attending and for bringing their children to the school.

Wallen Kajunwa, the Mayor of Bikurungu Town Council, who has been acting as the school’s head, welcomed the appointment of the acting Headteacher. He pledged ongoing collaboration with her for the betterment of Bikurungu Seed School and noted that the school currently enrolls 114 students from Senior 1 to Senior 3. The mayor also highlighted the presence of volunteer teachers and called on the central government to provide payroll teachers so the school can officially commence full teaching operations.
The contractor overseeing the site, Kinombe-Nyaruzinga Construction Company Limited, Mr director Nshabire Godfrey, urged parents who have not yet enrolled their children to do so promptly, stressing that the school is already in operation. He said the project had received approval from the head of all RDCs in Uganda, Maj. Martha Asiimwe, to begin work.
