Parents of four students at Kahengye Parents Secondary School were left devastated on Wednesday evening when a tragic accident resulted in the death of two of their children. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, October 15th 2025 along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo road, near Iterero trading center, just a short distance from Fountain Junior Primary School.

According to reports, the accident took place around 10:10 PM when four students allegedly escaped from the school after evening preparations. They hired a motorcycle, registration number UMA 702BP, intending to travel to Nyamunuka town. However, on their return, they collided with another motorcycle, UGD 386R, which was being ridden by Nuwashaba Reagan, carrying 16-year-old Gumoshabe Victorian from Kakibaya, Southern Division, Kebison Town Council.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the collision occurred as both riders attempted to avoid numerous potholes on the road, which locals have long deemed dangerous. Tragically, both riders—Amupire Odurike, a Senior 5 student and Head Prefect at Kahengye Parents Secondary School, and Nuwashaba Reagan—died instantly at the scene.

Four other students sustained serious injuries. Turyaguma Genious, the Chairperson of the School Council, was initially taken to Nyakibale Hospital before being referred to Mbarara Referral Hospital. Other injured students, including Musiimenta Elias, Akadwanaho Nelson, and Gumoshabe Victorian, were rushed to Divine Mercy Clinic in Rwashamaire. Victorian’s condition later worsened, necessitating her transfer to Mbarara Referral Hospital for further treatment.

Local authorities were quick to respond, with Nyamunuka Town Council’s internal security officer notifying Rwashamaire Police, who subsequently collected the bodies and impounded the motorcycles for further investigation. The deceased were taken to Rwashamaire HC IV Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Yassin Katafa Byamukama, the Speaker of Nyamunuka Town Council, condemned the poor state of the road, emphasizing that the potholes along this stretch and near Bwongyera Girls School have claimed numerous lives. He urged the Ministry of Works and Transport to take immediate action to repair the road and prevent future accidents.

The police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the collision, as the community mourns the loss of two young lives and calls for urgent improvements to road safety.
