The Rukungiri District Local Government has committed to supporting the B13 ghetto youth in Rukungiri Municipality. This initiative aims to address the myriad challenges faced by this community, including high unemployment rates and social segregation, which have led to increased levels of despair and substance abuse.

Resident District Commissioner Bron Kikanshemeza emphasized the government’s responsibility to initiate income-generating projects for the ghetto youth. “There is no way the government can support other groups and leave out these young people,” he stated. “They are also Ugandans and deserve access to services.”

Kikanshemeza further urged the youth to reduce drug abuse and avoid negative behaviors such as theft and violence, explaining that such actions can have detrimental effects on their lives. He called for cooperation between the ghetto youth and other community members to foster a peaceful environment.

The National Resistance Movement Youths cadre representative for Western Uganda, Nuwamanya Robert, expressed appreciation for the local government’s commitment to supporting the ghetto youth. He acknowledged the struggles faced by this community, noting that they often lacked a platform to voice their challenges.

Robert stressed the importance of organization and collaboration with the government to improve their livelihoods.

Ghetto youth leaders, including Mugumya Isac from Omukacyeka and Smokie Fattie, expressed gratitude for the government’s recognition and support. They requested assistance in enhancing their businesses and accessing capital to start new income-generating projects, which would significantly improve their quality of life.

The local government’s pledge marks a hopeful step towards empowering the youth in Rukungiri Municipality, aiming to create a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
