The nomination exercise for the 2026 general elections commenced today at the Farmers Resource Center in Rukungiri District, marking the beginning of a crucial political process.
The exercise is set to run from September 3rd to 5th for District Chairpersons and Councilors, with nominations for Municipal Councilors starting on September 8. Following that, the process will continue from September 11 to 23 for Sub County level candidates.
Namara K. Abasi, the returning officer for the Rukungiri District Electoral Commission, reported a promising initial turnout, with over 30 candidates already nominated.
However, Abasi issued a stern warning to these candidates, advising them against commencing their campaigns before the official start date. He stressed that the Electoral Commission possesses the authority to both nominate and denominate candidates who fail to adhere to these guidelines.
Among the candidates, Kapesha Johnson, who is running as an independent for the Southern Division Councilor position, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to aspire for candidacy. He emphasized his commitment to development, outlining plans that he believes will benefit the people of Southern Division.
Another notable candidate, Mwebesa Emmanuel, the NRM party flag bearer and current Councilor for Bikurungu Town Council, pledged to continue his development initiatives. He cited the support from residents, which has enabled improvements in water supply, electricity, and education in the area.
In a call for decorum, Deputy RDC Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom urged all nominees to follow the Electoral Commission’s guidelines closely. He highlighted the importance of campaigning peacefully and respectfully, advising candidates to focus on delivering their manifestos rather than resorting to intimidation tactics.
As the nomination exercise unfolds, the candidates and the public are reminded of the need for a fair and transparent electoral process, setting the stage for the upcoming elections in 2026. The Electoral Commission’s vigilance will be crucial in maintaining order and integrity throughout this electoral cycle.
