The long-awaited powerline extension project in Rujumbura County, Rukungiri District, has begun to take shape, following its launch last month by the Country’s Energy Minister, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa.

A recent survey conducted by our reporter found employees of City Harvest Engineering Company Limited laying wires on electricity poles in Kyamurari and Kigaaga Parishes, part of Nyakagyeme Sub County.

This development has sparked joy among community members, who are expressing their gratitude to the Minister of Security, Hon. Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, as they eagerly anticipate electricity in their homes.

This project, funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, was initially introduced in 2013 as part of a nationwide effort to expand electricity access to rural households.

However, progress stalled when the original contractor abandoned the works, leaving electric poles standing for years without any wiring—leading to public frustration and political blame.

“They always said the electric poles would remain there without wires. That changes now. The Minister of Energy is here, and electricity is coming,” stated Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi during the launch event in July.

Minister Nankabirwa reassured locals that their wait is over. “These poles have been up for long, as if the devil thought it had won. But today, we are here to confirm that these poles will finally get wires—and you will get electricity,” she declared.

The project is expected to significantly increase electricity access and stimulate economic growth in the sub-counties of Buhunga, Ruhunda, and Nyakagyeme.

Residents, including Yosiya Mwesigwa from Kigaaga Parish, Fred Bashija from Kyamurari, Gloria Keshaha from Katooma, and Doreen Kiconco, expressed their excitement about the ongoing works. They plan to initiate income-generating activities such as welding, salons, and coffee processing using electricity, which will enhance their livelihoods.

They also shared the challenges they faced due to the lack of electricity, including difficulties in charging phones and radios, and insufficient lighting in homes and businesses.

The project is being executed by City Harvest Contractor Limited at a cost of 7.8 billion Ugandan shillings. Isaac Kaharuza, the Political Assistant to Minister Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, informed our reporter that additional works will soon commence in parts of Kihanga and Buhunga, as well as areas mapped in Ruhinda Sub County.
