Hailstorms devastate Ntungamo’s Ruhaama Residents

Residents of Igurwa Ruhaama in Ntungamo District are pleading for assistance following severe flooding caused by heavy rains on August 10, 2025. The extreme weather conditions, characterized by torrential downpours and strong winds, have left the community in a state of crisis, with many families facing food insecurity and homelessness.

The flooding resulted in the destruction of vital properties, including banana plantations and gardens, which are essential for both food and income generation. The loss of these resources has devastated the livelihoods of many families, affecting not just individual households but the entire community.

Notable residents like Mwebaze, Mazongoza, and Nshekanabo have reported significant damage to their properties, underscoring the widespread nature of the disaster in the whole Parish.

Twinomujuni Edivina, a resident and mother, and other residents expressed their deep concern over the situation, stating that she has been left without food to feed their children and called on local leaders, including Hon. Namanya Violah and Hon. Henry Zinkuratiire, as well as the District Chairperson LC 5, Sam Mucunguzi Rwakigoba, to provide urgent support. Edivina specifically urged for the distribution of posho (maize flour) to help families cope with their immediate needs.

Mugisha Ackleo an aspiring Councilor Igurwa Parish Ruhaama Sub county explained that the crisis has also raised concerns about education, as many families relied on selling bananas to pay for school fees. 

Mugisha highlighted the anxiety parents feel regarding their children’s education stressing that the destruction of crops threatens not only their food security but also their ability to send children to school.

The residents of Igurwa Ruhaama are calling for swift action from both government and non-governmental organizations to address their plight. Immediate intervention is crucial to help the community recover from this devastating event and ensure families can regain their footing. The situation remains critical, and the need for assistance is urgent.
