Residents of Nyabubaare, particularly the congregation of the United Pentecostal Church, are urgently seeking assistance following severe rainfall on October 16, 2025. The extreme weather, characterized by torrential downpours and fierce winds, has plunged the community into crisis, creating widespread food insecurity, homelessness, and a lack of places to worship.
The heavy rains have wreaked havoc, resulting in significant destruction of vital properties. Many homes have been rendered uninhabitable, and the local church has sustained severe damage, leaving the community without a place for worship. Furthermore, crucial agricultural lands, including banana plantations and vegetable gardens, have been devastated, impacting both food supply and income. Prominent residents such as Ezra Arihamwenitwe, Mugyenyi Wellen Gareeba, and Akwandwanaho Alone have reported extensive damage, underscoring the disaster’s widespread impact.
Pastor Aliseni Byamugisha, the pastor of the Nyabubaare United Pentecostal Church, along with local women, expressed their deep concern over the dire situation. They reported a critical lack of food and emphasized the need for a place to pray. The pastor, along with other community leaders, has called upon local authorities, including Hon. Yona Musinguzi, the Member of Parliament for Ntungamo Municipality, and District Chairperson LC 5, Sam Mucunguzi Rwakigoba, for urgent support. Their requests include the distribution of essential supplies such as posho (maize flour) and beans to help families cope with immediate needs, as well as iron sheets for church renovations.
Karuhanga Edward, Vice Chairman LC 1 Nyabubaare 2, highlighted that many families are struggling to eat, as they previously depended on selling bananas to pay for school fees. He also stressed the anxiety surrounding the lack of a place for church services, noting that the destruction of both the church and crops jeopardizes their food security and spiritual well-being.
The residents of Nyabubaare are calling for immediate action from both government and non-governmental organizations. Swift intervention is crucial to help the community recover from this devastating event and ensure that families can regain their footing. The situation remains critical, and urgent assistance is needed.
