Rukungiri District to benefit on Tarehe Sita Community Support Initiatives

In preparation to celebrate Tarehe Sita, Rukungiri District has marked with a significant gathering involving officials from the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF). The meeting, held at the District Council Hall in Rukungiri Municipality, aimed to enhance local services and foster community development.

Tarehe Sita, celebrated annually, commemorates the founding of the UPDF on February 6, 1981. Major Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF spokesperson, highlighted the historical significance of the day, recalling how 40 soldiers seized the Kabamba Barracks to initiate a struggle for Uganda’s liberation. “This year, we decided to focus on the Kigezi Region for our celebrations, in recognition of the support from local communities,” Kulayigye stated.

At the meeting, Kulayigye unveiled a range of initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and services in the district. These include the construction of educational facilities and health centers, provision of medical services through health camps, and efforts to protect the environment via tree planting. “We are committed to giving back to the community that has always supported us. Our focus is on building schools, hospitals, and providing essential educational materials,” he added.

The support has already been evident in several ongoing projects, including renovations at Rwakabengo Health Center III and Rukungiri Health Center IV. Plans are also in place to enhance facilities at Kikarara and Bwanga primary schools, as well as to provide educational resources to various institutions throughout the region.

Hon. Mathias Rwabugumi, the NRM flag bearer for Rubabo Constituency, expressed his gratitude for the UPDF’s contributions to community development. He pledged to advocate for increased funding for the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs once elected to Parliament. Rwabugumi also raised concerns about infrastructure challenges, particularly the need for bridge repairs in Nyakishenyi and Nyarushanje.

RDC Bron Kikanshemeza announced a series of community projects that will run until the next Tarehe Sita celebration. These projects aim to renovate schools, establish medical camps, and provide essential facilities. He emphasized for unity mostly to politicians remarking that UPDF has played a key role in ensuring security, and now it’s giving back to the communities. Kikanshemeza remarked.

The Tarehe Sita celebrations in Rukungiri serve as a reminder of the UPDF’s commitment to national service and community development, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and support among citizens for a brighter future.
