A total of 810 candidates have been officially nominated to participate in the local government elections scheduled for 2026. The nomination exercise, conducted by the Rukungiri District Electoral Commission, took place from September 3 to September 24, 2025.

Returning Officer Namara K. Abasi reported that the nominations included 65 candidates for Municipal councils, 106 for District councils, and 639 for Sub-county councils, culminating in a total of 810 nominees.

Abasi noted that the nomination process proceeded smoothly, with a commendable turnout of candidates. “I would like to express my gratitude to all candidates who participated in this exercise,” he stated.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to electoral guidelines, urging nominees not to engage in campaigning until the official campaign period begins in November. “Engaging in campaigning before the designated time could lead to disqualification,” he warned.

Abasi also called for peace and harmony among candidates and urged the public to maintain calm as preparations for the 2026 general elections continue. He stressed the need for a free and fair electoral process, essential for the democratic integrity of the upcoming elections.

As the electoral landscape develops, all eyes will be on Rukungiri District as it prepares for a significant electoral event.
