Residents of Rukungiri District have been called upon to utilize social media and other communication platforms responsibly as the 2026 general election approaches.
Mr. Kikanshemeza Bron, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), emphasized the importance of promoting peace within the community.
In his address, Kikanshemeza highlighted that Rukungiri District has experienced a higher incidence of social media misuse compared to other areas. He urged particularly the youth to exercise caution when engaging online, warning against the dangers of spreading false information, using abusive language, and defamation.
“Social media should be a tool for development, education, and business, rather than a weapon for violence,” Kikanshemeza noted.
He encouraged all social media users to focus on positive contributions that foster unity and peace in the district. The RDC also reminded the public that any form of blackmail via social media should be reported to the authorities, and offenders would face legal consequences.
Kikanshemeza’s message was clear: a well-informed and responsible use of media is essential for maintaining peace and ensuring a smooth electoral process in Rukungiri.
“Let us all commit to using media wisely, so we can enjoy an organized election and a peaceful community,” he urged.
As the election date approaches, the RDC’s call to action serves as a timely reminder for residents to be vigilant and responsible in their online interactions.
