Rukungiri District, Uganda— Maj Martha Asiimwe, head of the RDC Secretariat and Anti-Corruption Unit in the Office of the President, visited Rukungiri District, where she expressed gratitude to residents for their robust support towards President Yoweri Museveni in the recent elections, achieving over 70% of the votes. Her remarks came during a meeting at the Rukungiri District Council Hall, focused on evaluating ongoing government programs aimed at local development.
Maj Asiimwe emphasized the positive impact of the government’s initiatives on community welfare. She highlighted various projects, including the construction of health centers, improvement of road infrastructure, and a targeted focus on education, evidenced by the establishment of seed schools and assistance to private institutions. “Rukungiri residents voted based on the tangible development the government has brought to our district,” she stated, underscoring the connection between political choices and community benefits.
Expressing appreciation for the district leadership’s dedication to combating corruption, she warned that officials found guilty of misconduct would be held accountable. Maj Asiimwe encouraged local leaders to host community meetings, known as Barazas, to engage with citizens directly, allowing for a two-way dialogue about local challenges and solutions. She also called on district officials to leverage radio programs to connect with residents, ensuring that accurate information reaches the community.

During her visit, Maj Asiimwe inspected various government projects, noting several were either incomplete or underperforming, such as irrigation schemes intended to boost local agricultural productivity. She pledged to advocate for the urgent completion of these projects to enhance income generation for residents.

Rukungiri District Chairperson, Hon Geoffrey Kyomukama, thanked the leadership for its unity and commitment, which have been instrumental in the district’s progress. He expressed sincere appreciation to Maj Asiimwe for spotlighting the collective efforts to develop Rukungiri.

Resident District Commissioner, Brone Kikanshemeza, also acknowledged Maj Asiimwe’s oversight and reported ongoing issues, particularly the illegal sand mining at Rushaaya Bridge, which threatens the structure. He expressed gratitude to the district engineer and contractor for their collaboration on the construction of Bikurungu Seed School and confirmed that efforts to recruit new teachers were underway.
