In a notable political shift, Frank Mabwa has emerged victorious over the incumbent LC 3 Chairperson, Kahanyi Charles, in the elections held in Kebisoni Subcounty, Rukungiri District. This election was part of a nationwide voting event for Subcounty LC 3 Chairpersons and Councilors, marking a significant change in local governance.
Kahanyi Charles, who was seeking his fourth consecutive term, faced a competitive challenge from Mabwa, his former vice-chairperson. The election results revealed a decisive win for Mabwa, who secured over 100 votes more than his opponent. This outcome reflects the community’s desire for new leadership after years of Kahanyi’s tenure.
Local residents expressed mixed feelings about the transition. Gumisiriza Aggry from Karubunda Parish acknowledged Kahanyi’s contributions, highlighting his role in various developmental projects and the successful shift of the subcounty from Kebisoni Town Council.
Aggrey stated that Kahanyi has been a good leader, and they appreciate his achievements. However, it’s time for new leadership, and they believe Frank can bring fresh ideas.
Kyomugisha Lovence from Nyibingo Parish echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of youth in leadership saying that they want someone who can relate to the younger generation and understand their needs,. The community feels that Kahanyi, while still capable, has had great opportunity to lead and can now support Mabwa in his new role.
In addition to the chairperson election, other positions were contested in Kebisoni Subcounty. Kanyesigye Isaac won the Youth Chairperson role for the NRM after his opponent withdrew just before the voting exercise, fearing defeat amidst Isaac’s strong support base. Meanwhile, Kobugabe Eva secured her position as the Woman Councilor for Kyigyiro Parish without opposition. She expressed her gratitude to her supporters and emphasized her commitment to development, urging all parties, including NUP and PFF, to collaborate for the community’s growth.
Kobugabe stated that she has been working for the community without being a councilor. Now that she has this seat, promised to focus on development in Kyigyiro Parish and beyond.
The elections signify a clear desire for change among the residents of Kebisoni Subcounty, who are looking forward to a new era of leadership while recognizing the foundations laid by their previous leaders.
