In a heated electoral contest for the LC5 chairperson seat in Rukungiri District, Angello Twinomuhangi has raised serious allegations of irregularities that he claims marred the recent election. Emerging from the election with 20,934 votes, Twinomuhangi secured the second position, trailing behind Andrewson Charles Kateebire who won with 40,946 votes. Ainembabazi Hillary followed in third place with 16,196 votes.

Twinomuhangi’s contest was fraught with challenges, which he asserts were largely due to corrupt practices undermining the electoral process. During a press conference, he detailed how several of his agents were dismissed from polling stations, allowing electoral officers to manipulate votes in favor of Kateebire. He urged the public to take note of what he described as “blatant attempts to influence the outcome.”

Compounding these grievances, Twinomuhangi named prominent political figures, including General Henry Tumukunde, Peace Rugambwa, and Hon. Merry Paula, accusing them of distributing money to voters to rally support for Kateebire. “It is disheartening to see well-known politicians engage in such unethical tactics,” he remarked, expressing his frustration over the challenges of competing against a coalition of influential figures.

In another troubling development, Twinomuhangi criticized a local radio station for allegedly disseminating false information during the electoral period. He claimed that the station tampered with the Electoral Commission’s official roles, leading to the premature reporting of election results. This misinformation campaign, he stated, included defamatory allegations against various candidates, damaging their reputations and credibility.

As a response to this misconduct, Twinomuhangi is prepared to pursue legal action against the radio station. He emphasized, “It is crucial for media outlets to operate responsibly, especially during elections that are pivotal to our democracy.”

Despite his electoral defeat, Twinomuhangi expressed heartfelt gratitude to his supporters for their unwavering loyalty. “I urge everyone to remain calm and focused. Together, we will find ways to develop Rukungiri District,” he said, promising to continue advocating for transparency and integrity in governance.
