Residents of Bwizibwera Cell in Rutooma-Ruhumba Town Council, Mbarara District were over the weekend left in shock after the brutal murder of a 25 year old woman Ritah Akankunda.

The incident has since triggered the Police in Mbarara District to arrest two suspects in connection with this murder.

The suspects have been identified as Byamukama Javira Mawuruba, 19, a casual laborer and Kembabazi Winnie, 30, who is the sister-in-law of the deceased. They were apprehended on Sunday, according to police reports.

Veterinary doctor Karegyeya Brighton alerted authorities after discovering Akakunda’s body, prompting a swift response from the police.

A forensic team processed the crime scene, and a police dog named Honey tracked a scent to blood-stained clothes found at the residence of Namutebi Jolly. The clothes were identified as belonging to Byamukama.

Upon interrogation, Byamukama confessed to the murder, alleging that Kembabazi had paid him to kill Akakunda due to unresolved personal issues between the two women.

Akakunda was found brutally murdered in her home on Saturday morning. Reports indicate she had been left at home with her sister-in-law, Winnie Kabaare, and the family shamba boy after her husband, Fred Kabaare, left for work in Bwizibwera town.

Mbarara District Police Commander SP Benon Byamukama said that the shamba boy had confessed to killing Akankunda, and that Kembabazi had reportedly paid him Shs100,000 to kill Akankunda.

Police transported Akankunda’s body to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem. The suspects are expected in court when the investigations into the murder that shook Bwizibwera town is complete.
